Hello there, my name is Brandi C Cowan, I reside in Knoxville TN with my Fiance, 2 cats, and 55 lb Pit-Mix. City life took some getting used to when I first moved here in 2012. I grew up in a small coal town called St. Charles, Virginia. Most of the children I grew up with were like me and had parents that fought constantly or had substance abuse issues. About half of us I call survivors and the rest followed in their parent's footsteps. I want to help children, no matter the situation, to know that they’re not alone and that they can succeed.
I have been a caregiver my entire life. My grandmother, Mamaw Betty, was diagnosed with Colon Cancer while I was still in elementary school and I immediately became her sole care provider. This event is what started my compassion and empathy for others. I continued to care for ill family members through high school and received my nursing assistant certification not long after graduation.
I continued to care for others physically until 2016 when I took a position as an advocate for individuals using mental health services. This experience confirmed my passion for education and advocacy for underrepresented groups. In that position, I learned a great deal about myself and how to practice self-care in a way that was right for me as an individual. I would like to assist your child in finding what's right for them.
I became a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist in 2017 and am now using it to help others in their own self-care journies. I am currently pursuing my Associate's degree in Social Work at Pellissippi State Community College. I have lived experience as a cisgendered, white woman that is a member of the LGBTQ+ community with a mental health diagnosis.
I take an anti-racist, anti-homophobic approach in everything I do, while also striving to be transparent, honest, and dependable. I want to hear what you have to say. Sometimes life is hard and I want you to know that it is okay to ask for help. I am knowledgeable enough to know that I won’t have the answer for everything, but confident in my abilities to seek the answers out and be an advocate for you or your child.
Thank you for taking the time to read my Bio, if you feel like I would be a good fit for you, I look forward to hearing from you, and assisting you in your own journey.
